Tallarn Chimeras

I’ve been working on a ride for Big Al (Al'Rahem) and the infantry platoon he will be leading. I wanted them to be mechanized, to benefit from the outflanking that he allows. That called for some Chimeras, and I wanted to change the profile a bit to make them stand out from the Chimeras I have for the Catachan Jungle boys.

SandWyrm have a cool guide for changing the Chimera from a Russian APC style to a Nato APC style by pushing the turret back. Check out the tutorial he made: http://theback40k.blogspot.se/2010/04/converting-set-back-chimeras-part-i.html

Another thing I wanted was ability to change the hull mounted weapon, as Heavy Bolter might not be the best choice for all scenarios. Magnetizing them is however easy, as all it calls for is a bit of plastic card glued on the inside of the hull + some rare earth magnets.

Enjoy & have a nice Sunday!

Expanding the motorpool: Chimera

Another tank joins the motor poll –The command chimera ‘Pirana’ for the Catachan XI is now complete – This means that I have completed all my IG tanks, with the exception of one super heavy and a Valkyrie. :o)
You can see the paint process in the posts called “Expanding the motorpool: Hellhound & Chimera”.

Expanding the motorpool: Hellhound & Chimera IV

WIP: Not much progress on the tanks this weekend, as I ended up playing 40k and Warhammer Fantasy Role Play. None the less a little progress picture, where you’ll notice that the camouflage is now defined and some boltgun metal has appeared here and there – Next up is details and weathering.

Expanding the motorpool: Hellhound & Chimera III

WIP: Yesterday’s paint session was short but productive. The majority of time was spent using masking tape to define the camouflage stripes. After that I used the airbrush to add the brown on top of a light brown, in order to get some highlights.

From now on it’ll be brushwork all the way.

Expanding the motorpool: Hellhound & Chimera II

WIP: This month I’m going to paint the addition to the motor pool for my 40k Guard army. A Chimera and a Hellhound. This work will be documented with a WIP shot after each paint session, where the 1st was yesterday.

I primed the tanks black using GW black primer – Banner got some airbrush primer.
Then I applied the green as described in an earlier post (found here).
Finally I painted the fuel tanks for the Hellhound using the airbrush – Red over redish brown.

Expanding the motorpool: Hellhound & Chimera

Modelling a Hellhound straight out of the box, and building a Chimera for company command or some veterans is what I have been doing the last couple of days. Lets look at the Chimera first…

I wanted a ride for company command or some veterans (depending on the list played), and I wanted it to look very different from my other 3 Chimeras that are assembled w/o any conversions or bling. The idea was to make a vehicle that was heavily loaded for a longer campaign in isolated areas, and with my army theme being Catachans I had to include a Rambo driver. The basis of this was the vehicle accessories sprue, backpacks from the hwy weapons sprue and bits from the battlefield accessories sprue.

The other tank assembled was a Hellhound – There is not much to see, but my reason for showing is to remind people to consider painting and gaming, before gluing everything in place. As you see I haven’t glued in the fuel, top cover and back hatch. Reason for that is that I need to get access to the barrels for priming and painting. Another thing not glued is the turret mounted weapon. The new Hellhound allows various variants, and if not glued, they’re interchangeable, allowing you to field e.g. a Devil Dog in stead of a Hellhound just by switching the turret weapon – No magnets, no magic :o)
